Carbon Offsets

Building a sustainable energy future

Last updated on 7 June 2024

At Energy Locals, we carbon offset 100% of your energy usage. In the past year we offset over 96,000 tonnes of carbon, which is equivalent to taking around 21,000 cars off the road for a year.*

What are carbon offsets?

Think of carbon offsets as our way of making amends to the planet for the emissions we can’t avoid. Whether it’s from commuting to work, powering our homes, or heating our spaces, each one of us has a carbon footprint.

Carbon offsets are generated from initiatives that work to mitigate these emissions, such as renewable energy projects, reforestation efforts, and energy efficiency programs.

How does it work?

Carbon offsets involve the purchase and surrender of carbon offset credits. These credits are not just numbers; they represent real-world actions taken to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and our customers.

Each carbon offset credit is equivalent to the reduction or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.

What we’re doing

We are committed to making a positive impact on the environment. To support this commitment, we offset all carbon emissions associated with your energy use, through our purchase and surrender of International Verified Carbon Units. This ensures that your consumption is carbon neutral.

By implementing these offsets, we aim to increase awareness about the impacts of climate change and the potential for individual contributions towards sustainability.

We acknowledge that this isn’t a long-term solution, but it’s a start while we get the transition to 100% renewables moving faster. Learn what we’re doing to provide cleaner community energy here.

*This is calculated based on data provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2023 that a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 tonnes of CO2 per year, assuming a fuel economy of about 22.2 miles per gallon and drives around 11,500 miles per year.
