How it works

1.

Place an order

Request your new smart meter online in just a few minutes. We'll ask for some details, such as whether the meter needs to be solar-ready and whether there are any access issues.

2.

We'll do the admin

We'll place an order with our metering provider. If you're not yet an Energy Locals customer, we can place the order from the day your transfer is complete. All the meters they install are digital, meaning we'll get data from your meter every day.

3.

Relax

Most meters are installed within 4-6 weeks. Our metering provider will contact you to arrange a time for the installation.

4.

Installation day

Our engineer will take away your old meter and install the digital one. This will require a very brief power outage, so that he or she doesn't electrocute themselves ⚡️

5.

We'll update your account

We'll update your account and soon you'll be able to see your daily usage information via our self serve portal.

Q. Who owns the meter?
Our metering partner. We pay an annual fee and they look after safety, maintenance, the provision of data and the eventual replacement.
Q. Is it solar-ready?
Yes. The meter needs to be programmed before installation though, so if you have or are thinking of getting solar, please let us know so that we can make sure it's ready for capturing your solar exports and calculating your feed in tariff.
Q. Can I still change retailers?
Yes, but we hope you'll decide that our service is worth staying around for :) Your next retailer will most likely pay our metering provider for the ongoing data from the meter. We've heard a few examples of retailers ripping smart meters off the wall so they can install their own. Frankly they're idiots if they do this and you should tell them where to go.

Q. Why isn't the meter free?
Because there's no such thing as a free meter. If a retailer is telling you it's "free", we guarantee you'll be paying for it somewhere.
Q. What will it cost me next year?
Across our customer base we take the total metering costs and spread them equally across all customers. That's already included in our tariffs. If every one of our customers had a smart meter tomorrow, our tariffs would increase by about $60-70 per year. Of course, it will take many years before smart meters are installed in all homes and businesses.
Q. Where can I get more metering questions answered
