Energy Bill Relief

Energy Bill Relief for households

The Australian Government along with state and territory governments are working together to provide targeted electricity bill relief to eligible households and small businesses.

Who is eligible:

You can get bill relief if you meet all of the following:

  • You’re the primary electricity account holder, or named as the account holder
  • You must also hold an eligible concession card or receive an eligible government payment in the state or territory you live in.
  • Only one bill relief credit is provided per household, even if multiple eligible individuals reside there.
  • The relief is applicable only to your primary place of residence

If you meet the eligibility criteria but are not named on the bill and still pay for electricity, you’ll need to contact us to update the account information to receive the bill relief.

How much relief you can receive:

  • If you live in NSW, Queensland, South Australia, or Tasmania, you can get $500 per eligible household.
  • If you live in Victoria, you can get $250 per eligible household.
  • If you live in the ACT, you can get $175 per eligible household. Your bills will also be lower owing to the ACT’s Large-scale Feed-in Tariff Scheme which will lower the average bill by $152.

The amount you receive also depends on whether you have an eligible concession card or receive an eligible government payment in your state or territory.

What you need to do:

If you’re an Energy Locals customer and we already have your concession details, there’s no action required from you. We’ll apply the bill relief to your electricity account automatically, resulting in a reduced amount to your bill.

  • If you live in NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory or the ACT, you will get bill relief quarterly in the 2023-24 financial year.
  • If you live in Tasmania, you will get bill relief on your electricity bills in the September and June quarters of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 financial years.
  • If you live in Victoria, you will get bill relief in instalments in 2023-24.

Eligible businesses will automatically receive relief on their electricity bills starting from 1 July 2023.

Who is eligible:

To be eligible, your business must have a separately metered business tariff with us, and your annual electricity consumption should fall below the threshold set for your state or territory. The energy consumption thresholds are:

  • 150MWh in Tasmania

  • If your annual electricity consumption is above the small customer business threshold.
  • For the ACT and Victoria, small businesses in embedded networks are not eligible.

How much relief can you receive:

If your eligible small business is in Victoria, you will receive $325 in bill relief. For small businesses in NSW, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, and Tasmania, the relief amount is $650.

If your small business is located in the ACT, it will benefit from lower electricity charges resulting from the ACT’s Large-scale Feed-in Tariff Scheme. Small businesses with average electricity usage will receive a reduction of $624 in electricity charges and an additional $325 rebate.
